Today is the first Sunday of Lent, a time of preparation and reflection. The organ music leading up to Easter will present its own Lenten journey. Each Sunday, Scott will play a Bach chorale prelude based on Lenten hymns. Most of these come from the Orgelbüchlein (little organ book), Bach’s collection of preludes for Sundays in the liturgical year.
The organ offertories will reflect the Sunday’s topic of our Prayer Pathway series. The postludes will increase in dissonance as we approach Palm Sunday; this week’s postlude is in D major, the following four all in d minor. Palm Sunday’s music will mark Jesus’ grand entrance into Jerusalem. All organ music is chosen for a reason; can you discover how each piece fits?
