“Jesus Christ is Lord.”
Those will be marked as the first four words The Rev. Dr. John H. Fullerton, Jr. spoke to the congregation of First Presbyterian Church. He uttered those words in his first sermon to the congregation at large on Sunday, June 30 in a combined service. In the Congregational Meeting held immediately following the service, Dr. Fullerton was unanimously selected as the next Senior Pastor and Head of Staff for the Lakeland church.
Dr. Fullerton comes to FPC from St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Dunedin, Fla., where he is Lead Pastor. He has been at St. Andrews since 2004 and served churches in Mt. Vernon, Ohio, and Covington,Tennessee prior to that.
Dr. Fullerton holds degrees from the University of Florida, Princeton Theological Seminary, and Fuller Theological Seminary.
Throughout his ministry, Dr. Fullerton has shown himself to have a missional heart. He was the founding chair of the City of Dunedin’s social services committee that led to the establishment of the city’s first food pantry.
He has taught at Presbyterian seminaries in Madagascar and Russia, leading courses in discipleship, church communication, addiction and recovery, evangelism, and Sabbath-keeping. He has been a commissioner to the General Assembly and served as moderator of the Presbytery of Tampa Bay.
Free time for Dr. Fullerton is spent with his family, running, and supporting Florida Gators football.
He and his wife, Cile, have been married since 1983 and have three daughters: Christina, Lauren, and Madison. All three daughters are married, and two have children of their own.
Dr. Fullerton will begin his ministry with FPC and the Lakeland community later this summer. More information about him will be available at that time. We eagerly await this new season with Dr. Fullerton as we work to make and mature disciples for Christ in all that we do at First Presbyterian Church.
